Amsterdam City Center | Bus & Coach Access RestrictionsThe stunning historical metropolis of Amsterdam salutes visitors desiring to explore the city by coach every day throughout the year. One of Amsterdam’s exceptional points is its compact appeal, allowing visitors to discover many attractions by simple walking.

This restricted space made it challenging for coach drivers to drive around Amsterdam, and especially the city center. With continuous development it had become very hard to find a place to stop or park. Amsterdam city still welcomes coach travel, but some practical rules apply to keep traffic smoothness and safety for all people. The following map will help you get started: with indications to all the stopping and parking areas.

Parking spots and drop-off positions

Parking places selected for buses are accessible at the following sites:

• Artis Royal Zoo, Plantage Doklaan 38-40 exclusive for guests of Artis Royal Zoo and the Dutch Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum). (18 spaces)
• Gassan Diamonds, Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat 173-175. Exclusive for visitors to Gassan Diamonds. (20 places)
• The Harbour Club, Cruquiusweg 67 (20 spaces)
• Museumplein, entrance at Paulus Potterstraat / corner of Rijksmuseum (24 spaces)
• P-Plus Arena, Passage 100, Duivendrecht (60 spaces)
• P+R Zeeburg, Zuiderzeeweg 46a (20 spaces)
• Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), Piet Heinkade 27 (41 spaces)
• RAI, Europaplein 2-22 (20 spaces)
• Sloterdijk, Basisweg (11 spaces)

Drop-off points

You will find many points for dropping off and picking up travelers on the selected bus paths. All points are in the immediate vicinity of a museum, or a hotel, or an attraction or any major restaurant. It is very important to understand that these points are only available for 10 minutes maximum to drop off or pick up because any parking is strictly forbidden at these special points. We ask tour leaders to make sure that all their group members are aware of this clearly as the rules here are sternly imposed. A new update regarding the bus stops (H5 Victoria Hotel) and (H4 Holland International Round Trips) with both have been cancelled for ever. These changes happened because of the new major roads in central of Amsterdam city. The stops on the Prins Hendrikkade West (H1 De Ruyterkade West) which lies along the canal front at Lovers have been extended for more capacity. The second alternative point is (H28 De Ruyterkade Oost). These points can only be accessed from the western point of the Prins Hendrikkade via the turn circle.

The Coach and Tour Bus Agenda 2020-2025

The Coach and Tour Bus Agenda 2020-2025 plan highlights how the City Authority of Amsterdam will solve the issues of tour buses driving through or stopping in the city for the coming five years. Buses are effective in transferring groups, and using them can be improved of course. Therefore, the city administrators are seeking to help and comfort Amsterdam permanent residents so they can live with less inconvenience caused by buses in the limited and vulnerable city center.

It is a well-known fact that buses help when other public transport choices are absent. Diverse groups of travelers use buses like: tourists, elderly people, sports teams and students. However, in light of many studies by researchers in Amsterdam, It has been found that the scale of the issues and harm that buses cause actually out-weight their benefit for traffic in Amsterdam city center.

The issues are: the buses high emissions, their large sizes, their heavy weight affecting and endangering susceptible canal walls and bridges, and the local residents have to deal with the irritation caused by the booming number of buses, noise pollution, and many recorded hazardous traffic circumstances.

Action measures to elevate the above issues in the strategy:

Up till 2025, the following procedures have been adopted by Amsterdam council to solve the traffic affects of buses in the city center: Coaches will be absorbed in the outskirts of the city and keep them on main roads only by restricting bus access to few routes only, providing bus stops on the main routes only, and creating interchanges with other systems of green transport options. Coaches will only be permitted in the center if they are less than 7.5 tons, emission-free, and use only the designated parking areas.

Note: All the information and map above are from the city of Amsterdam free public information displayed on their website.
