The History of the Frankfurter Buchmesse

Since many centuries, Frankfurt city has established itself as an epicenter for banking and commerce activities in Europe, with credible references pointing to the Frankfurter Messe fairs dating back to the middle of the twelves century. Thanks to the great inventor of mobile letter printing and printing press Mr. Johannes Gutenberg’s press workshop in Frankfurt, the first book fair held in Frankfurt was actually held very near by in the Frankfurt. It is believed that the year for the first book fair was in 1478. The former Frankfurter Buchmesse director Mr. Peter Weidhaas has documented his research about the book fair in Frankfurt heritage in his book “The History of the Frankfurt Book Fair”. Mr. Weidhaas found that King Henry VIII of England sent his personal emissary Sir Thomas Bodley to attend the Frankfurter Buchmesse in the early days of the sixteenth century. The mission’s aim was to secure many valuable books to enrich the newly built archive at the Oxford University. Since the middle of the seventeenth century, with the Catholic church anti-Reformation religious movement efforts, which were the first censorship acts established by the creation of the Index of Forbidden Books deemed by the Catholic church unsuitable for public reading. This effort dealt a heavy blow to the Catholic city of Frankfurt and its great Fair, but gave prominence to the Protestant city of Leipzig book fairs which were free of any censorship. Frankfurt city managed to revive its famous book fair past in 1949 when more than two hundred German publishers assembled the first post-WW II Frankfurter Buchmesse. Since 1950, the Frankfurter Buchmesse has developed to an enormous international literature annual Gathering.
