Kalmar is a city in Kalmar län's southern Swedish province and Småland's historic province. The town is situated on the Baltic Sea's Kalmarsund. From the thirteenth to seventeenth centuries, Kalmar was one of Sweden's largest cities. Between 1602 and 1913 it was the episcopal seat of Kalmar Diocese with a bishop, and the 1702 Kalmar Cathedral is still a fine example of classical architecture. It became a fortified city, centered on Kalmar Castle. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, Kalmar's importance diminished until industrialization came up in the 19th century. Nowadays, this beautiful city on the south-eastern coast of Sweden came out on top when the Reseguiden travel site counted 37,000 votes in its annual poll for Sweden's most popular town.

For some recommendations regarding places to have on your trip itinerary when visiting Kalmar, please find below the Top 10 bus company tips for Kalmar.

1. Kalmar Slott (Kalmar Castle)

The fairy-tale turrets, the drawbridge, the foul dungeon and the secret passages ... Kalmar Slott has everything the proper castle should have. This dominant Renaissance fortress was once the most important building on the land and is properly fortified outside and sumptuously furnished inside. You 're free to wander around the castle as you please, but the rewarding and fun hour-long guided tours (at least once a day at 11:30 a.m.) included in your admission fee will really help you to appreciate the significance of this magnificent relic.

2.  Kalmar County Museum

The highlight of this fine museum, in the old harbour steam mill, is the finds of the Kronan flagship of the 17th century. The ship exploded and sank just before the battle of 1676, losing nearly 800 men. It was rediscovered in 1980, and so far more than 30,000 beautifully preserved objects have been excavated, including a spectacular gold hoard, clothing and musical instruments.

3. Kalmar Konstmuseum (Kalmar Art Museum)

The striking Kalmar Konstmuseum can be found in the park near Kalmar Slott. Although it does not have a permanent collection, its striking galleries usually host one or two contemporary exhibitions at any given time.

4. A World of Dinosaurs

When in Kalmar, make sure to visit A World of Dinosaurs. Kids are crazy about the giant monsters of the past in this great indoor Dino Museum about 10 km west of Kalmar. The museum is Europe's largest dinosaur exhibition. It features more than 130 authentic skeletons and an impressive array of convincing full-scale dino models underneath. A World of Dinosaurs makes for an exciting and interesting day with your whole family, so travel back millions of years and experience the world's most powerful animals ever.

5. The Cat’s Bottom (Kattrumpan)

Not only does central Kalmar boast a beautiful beach, it has the best name of any beach anywhere. Kattrumpan (the cat's bottom) shares his cheeky nickname with a small town district and is extremely popular among the youth of Kalmar. If that's not so much your thing, the city is so awash with beautiful beaches that there are even two, one reserved for nature lovers, and one reserved for dogs.

6. Kalmar Old Town

Kalmar's medieval center, now known as the Old Town, lies next to Kalmar Castle. It still has many well-preserved eighteenth and nineteenth-century buildings and is an inviting cultural and historic quarter. This entire area of the city was destroyed by fire in 1647, after which the city council voted to move the center to Kvarnholmen Island where it is today. After much strain, the population slowly progressed, and the wealthier people eventually started building summer houses on the land once the medieval city was. With its winding alleys and small old houses, the Old Town provides an earlier impression of Kalmar.

7. Hagby Church

Hagby Church is one of the few preserved round churches in Sweden that many find to be the best preserved one in the country. The church is in Vassmolösa outside Kalmar, just about a 20-minute ride on your Bus Charter Europe tour bus. Hagby Stone Church's predecessor was the wooded Saint Sigfrid Chapel, about two kilometers south of the present church structure. Building this stone church started in the late 12th century. The house acted as both a fortress and a defensive building. As a consequence, the upper wall has shooting and spear throwing openings. The most recent restoration attempted to highlight the building's old design, and it is now probably the best example of circular church architecture, which otherwise is only found on Bornholm Island.

8. Kalmar Cathedral (Kalmar Domkyrka)

The cathedral of Kalmar was built between 1660 and 1703 according to the plans of the famous castle architect Nicodemus Ticino the Elder, who was inspired by Italian Baroque churches when designing it. The cathedral church is centrally located on the main square Stortorget in the centre of Kalmar and is considered one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Sweden.

9. The Outdoors

Kalmar is a city literally surrounded by water. The city center, Kvarnholmen, is on its own island. There's plenty to do in and around the city center. Visit one of Kalmar's beaches, stroll around Kalmarsundsleden, or paddle around the city center and castle channels. Canoeing is a common activity in Kalmar, as the city is surrounded by canals and you can see many sights from the canoe. Kalmarsundsleden is a trail that passes many interesting and beautiful locations along the coast.

10. City Park (Stadsparken)

Kalmar City Park is next to Kalmar Castle. Johan Jeansson, a town merchant whose bust had been on display in the park since 1937, was the driving force behind the park project and his donation allowed the park to be laid between 1877 and 1880. The park contains many native plant and tree species, including bamboo, plane, temple tree, walnut and wing nut. After the opening in 1880, the Royal Secretary, Carl Greene, wrote in one of the city's newspapers, "In the stadspark you will breathe in health and beauty and enjoy the summer of the leafy trees."
