Bad Reichenhall is a famous and internationally known spa town situated in the Upper Bavarian district Berchtesgadener Land. The town is the gateway to the Salt Alps of the Berchtesgadener Land - embedded in a picturesque mountain panorama and only 20 kilometres away from Salzburg, Austria.  Bad Reichenhall lies in the Saalach Valley, framed by the foothills of the Berchtesgaden and Chiemgau Alps.

The town  can look back on a history of four thousand years of settlement. Its history has always been closely linked to the extraction of salt from brine. These days, Bad Reichenhall Alpine Salt is known throughout the country, has a large market share, and enjoys a special position among table salts.
Since the middle of the 19th century the town has been known far beyond the borders of Germany as a spa and holiday resort. Since 1890 it holds the German word "Bad" spa in its name, which stands for bath or spa. In 1899 the town was awarded the title of a Royal Bavarian State Spa.

Please have a look at our Top 10 bus company suggestions for Bad Reichenhall and surroundings:

1. Alte Saline

The Alte Saline, the Old Salt Works, in Bad Reichenhall is definitely worth a visit when you are in town. Built by King Ludwig I. of Bavaria in 1837, it used to produce salt from brine here from 1844 until the late 1920s. Nowadays, the Old Salt Works is an industrial monument and is under a preservation order. Take part in one of the guided tours and explore the Old Salt Works with its historic buildings, still spinning waterwheels, and the underground network of galleries and caves.

2. St. Nikolaus Kirche

The parish church of St. Nicholas was originally built in the 12th century as a three-nave Romanesque basilica. Over the centuries, it has been destroyed and rebuilt again and again. The impressive gold-coloured fresco in the chancel was only painted in the 19th century and although the church looks rather unimpressive from the outside, you will be impressed by the size and beauty of the interior of the church. The church is definitely worth a visit.

3. Thumsee

Surrounded by the mountain peaks of the Bavarian Prealps and the Berchtesgadener Alps, blue-turquoise Thumsee stretches out in a valley above the Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall. The Thumsee is a very popular local recreation and hiking area near Bad Reichenhall. It is located about 5 kilometres outside the town and can be easily reached by charter bus. Numerous hikes and mountain tours have their starting point at Lake Thumsee, and on hot summer days the lake offers a welcome cool-down. The circular trail around Lake Thumsee is particularly popular with joggers and Nordic walkers. Enjoy a peaceful day in nature.

4. Predigtstuhl

The Predigtstuhl is a 1613 m high mountain in the Berchtesgadener Alps and, along with Hochstaufen, Zwiesel and the Untersberg, is one of the local mountains of Bad Reichenhall. The Predigtstuhl can be climbed on hiking trails, or you can take the Predigtstuhlbahn, the oldest cable car in the world still in its original state. Once you have reached the summit, enjoy the fantastic view and fortify yourself in the Predigtstuhl mountain restaurant before setting off again on your way back.

5. Königliches Kurhaus

The neo-baroque Königliches Kurhaus (Royal Spa House), built in 1900 by Max Littmann, is available to guests for congresses, conferences, concerts and celebrations. A house with a lot of atmosphere, perfect for an inspiring exchange of ideas. The Royal Spa House is also suitable for wedding celebrations, as the flower-rich Royal Spa Garden with its Alpine brine fountain is directly adjacent to it. You have the perfect view of this garden from the majestic terrace of the Royal Spa House.

6. Karlstein Castle Ruins

The ruin of Karlstein is an old castle ruin situated on top of the Pankrazfelsen in the Karlstein district of Bad Reichenhall. The Counts of Plain are said to have built the first castle around AD 800. It was in their possession until 1218, when the later the castle was owned by the dukes of Bavaria.
The remains of the castle, which are still preserved today, date largely from the 12th century and have been used to monitor the old salt road and as a customs post. The hike from the Thumsee car park and the water lily pond in front of it leads along a beautiful path through the mountain forest to the top of the rock on which the castle is enthroned. A new wooden staircase leads you to the inner courtyard of the ruins of the castle. Here you can relax on the comfortable benches from the ascent and take a short breath. You have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful view of the Thumsee during your visit to the ruins.

7. Old Town

Bad Reichenhall is a beautiful and at the same time rather small town. In any case, enjoy a walk through the beautiful old town of Bad Reichenhall to discover the history of this alpine town. Admire imposing villas, magnificent buildings and spa facilities, and a multitude of fountains. The pedestrian zone of Bad Reichenhall is also one of the oldest in Bavaria and invites you to shop and linger in one of the pretty cafés and restaurants.

8. Königlicher Kurgarten

Created in 1868 by the Royal Bavarian Court Gardener Carl von Effner, the spa garden is still considered one of the most beautiful of its kind in Central Europe. It is harmoniously framed by perfectly executed buildings such as the Concert Rotunda, the Royal Spa House or the Wandelhalle. When you sit comfortably on a bench, you can see the magnificent mountain scenery that surrounds Bad Reichenhall almost lovingly from all sides.

9. Salzburg excursion

If you spend a day in Bad Reichenhall, you should definitely plan time for a day trip to Salzburg. The famous birthplace of Mozart and home of the Salzburg Festival is always worth a visit, and is also only 20 km away from Bad Reichenhall. Discover Salzburg's old town, the Getreidegasse, Hellbrunn Palace, Hohensalzberg Fortress and much more. Book your Coach Charter Europe charter bus for this exciting day trip.

10. Stadtmuseum

The Bad Reichenhall City Museum in the Historic Grain Box is mainly concerned with the history and development of the town of Bad Reichenhall as an important salt and spa town. The "salt" is, of course, the main theme of the exhibition.
