Venice is the capital of the Veneto region in northern Italy and was built on more than 100 small islands in an Adriatic lagoon. There are only a few roads and almost exclusively canals, including the Canale Grande with its Renaissance and Gothic palaces. At the central St. Mark's Square is St. Mark's Basilica with Byzantine mosaics and the bell tower, from which the view extends over the red roofs of the city.

Venice is a city of great beauty and cultural importance, but it is also unique and not like any other city in Italy. As the capital of the Veneto Region of Northern Italy, Venice is actually situated on 117 small islands, which are linked by a series of bridges and divided by a network of canals. With a population of around 250,000, Venice is not one of the largest cities in Veneto, but one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. During the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance, Venice was an extremely powerful fortress and a major financial and military base. It was also a city that saw a great deal of cultural and artistic growth and was well-known throughout the world.

Coach Charter Europe puts forward suggestions of the top 10 places for your itinerary in Venice  as follows:

1. St. Mark’s Basilica

Easily the most prestigious and famous building in Venice, St. Mark's Basilica is a sublime piece of architecture that has been the test of time since its inception in 1092 and remains one of the most important religious buildings in Northern Italy. Every element of this church is fantastic – from the ornate detail, sculptures and artwork of the front facade, to the beautifully painted frescoes and Byzantine works of art on the inside of the domed ceiling. Situated in Piazza San Marco, this basilica is easily accessible from the Grand Canal and is one of the best-known examples of Italian Byzantine architecture.

2. St. Mark’s Square

Although St. Mark's Basilica is the most famous building in Venice, St. Mark 's Square is the most famous square. Located on the Grand Canal, opposite the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, this square is of great significance in Venice and is a truly beautiful place to visit. Surrounding the Piazza is a collection of ornate buildings with arched walkways that perfectly frame it. Furthermore, many important buildings are located on the square, including St Mark's Campanile, St Mark's Basilica, Doge 's Palace and Torre.

3. Canale Grande

Venice has literally hundreds of canals linking the numerous islands that make up the city – the largest of which is the Canale Grande. This monumental canal is more like a river and flows from one side of Venice to the other and snakes through the middle in a wide S-shaped bend. Over 170 buildings dating back to the 13th century line the banks of the canal and have served as a significant waterway in the city for hundreds of years. Only four bridges span the Grand Canal as people and visitors usually travel along the canal.

4. Ponte di Rialto

As one of the bridges spanning the impressive Grand Canal, the Ponte di Rialto is arguably the most famous and iconic. Connecting the San Marco and San Polo districts of Venice, the bridge is a significant pedestrian path, but also a popular tourist attraction. Originally a wooden bridge, it stood for hundreds of years before it collapsed in 1524. After this event, an ornate stone bridge was constructed that still stands today. The detail and design of the bridge is absolutely stunning and its symmetry perfectly frames the Grand Canal. Moreover, there is also a collection of shops on the bridge that sell a variety of products from souvenirs to jewelry.

5. Gallerie dell’Accademia

Located opposite the Ponte dell'Accademia on the Grand Canal, this museum houses a fine collection of pre-19th century art and features works by artists such as Bellini, Canaletto and Titian. The building where the gallery is located was originally a monastery and was turned into a museum in the mid-to late 1700's. For those who love Renaissance art and classic masterpieces, this gallery delivers. Perhaps its best-known piece is the Vitruvian Man by Da Vinci, which depicts the perfect proportions of man. Other prominent works include the Resurrection by Tintoretto, the Virgin and the Child by Titian, and the Resurrection by Titian.

6. Venice Lido

If you are looking for a place to relax and get away from the majority of visitors, the Lido is the place to go. This separate island provides a buffer between Venice and the Adriatic Sea and features a long stretch of beautiful beach to enjoy. Home to around 20,000 people, the Lido also has a host of residential areas, stores, restaurants and hotels.

7. Doges Palace

Apart from the Basilica and Campanile, one of the most prominent buildings in Venice, Doges Palace is also situated on St. Mark 's Square, but looks out onto the Grand Canal. This ornate palace is absolutely magnificent, and the front façade features a spectacular arched design made of white stone with a series of diamond designs on the walls. Inside, the palace is just as impressive and there are a variety of immensely decorated rooms, all of which have original details, furniture and artwork. The palace's tours are available and it is advisable to spend some time visiting both the exterior.

8. Bridge of Sighs

While it is just a small bridge in the relative scheme of Venice, the Sighs Bridge is one of the most viewed structures in the city and an significant historical landmark. Passing over the Rio di Palazzo, the bridge links the Prigioni Nuove to the Doge's Palace. Tradition has it that, when offenders had been brought over the bridge from the Palace, they will have one last sight of Venice and sighed; contemplating their inevitable punishment and incarceration. When visiting St. Mark 's Square, it's also a must to see this famous bridge.

9. San Marco Campanile

As the tallest structure in Venice, the bell tower is a majestic building that stands at a massive 98.6 m high. The building that stands now is, in reality, a restoration as the original collapsed in 1902. Originally constructed in the 9th century, the bell tower was used as a watch tower. Over the years, the tower has been damaged by fire, earthquakes and even lightening. Made of plain red brick construction, the main shaft is very plain, but the bell tower and pinnacle features a multitude of arches and stonework, and the top features a golden statue of the Angel Gabriel.

10. Murano

Murano is another island in the Venice district – this area of land is actually made up of a number of small islands linked together by a series of canals and bridges (like Venice). Murano has a lovely charm and is sometimes less busy than the main areas of Venice. This wonderful island town has many sights, including the Basilica dei Santa Maria, the Campo Santo Stefano and the Palazzo Da Mula. Furthermore, Murano is renowned for its glass blowing and you can see live demonstrations in the numerous factories that are set up here.
